The Top Herbs for Hair Loss

Because hair is an important part of appearance, hair loss can result in loss of self-esteem and feeling unattractive, especially in women and younger men. Hair loss sufferers spend billion of dollars annually on remedies ranging from drugs to vitamins to special tonics and shampoos. Though drugs sometimes are effective, many people are wary of their potential side effects and concerned about the ongoing expense. This has led to increased interest in alternative remedies such as herbal medicine.

There are eight herbs that have long been believed to reduce the rate of hair loss and, at the same time, stimulate hair regrowth.

1) Dong Quai (Chinese Angelica)

Dong Quai is a traditional Chinese herb that is used to stop hair loss and even regrow hair. Dong Quai contains phytoestrogens, which reduces the formation of DHT, the main cause of hair loss in men.

2) Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is a very popular herbal remedy that is thought to help with many problems, among them improving the circulation of blood to the brain and skin. The majority of herbalists who recommend this herb for hair loss do so believing that the increase of blood to the brain and skin delivers more nutrients to the hair follicles and so promotes hair regrowth.

3)Green Tea (Camellia Sinesis)

Green tea is another popular herbal remedy because it is believed that the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase is inhibited by the catechins found in the green tea. Some herbalists claim that you will reduce the risk of male pattern type baldness if you drink several cups of green tea or take it in capsule form on a daily basis.

4) He Shou Wu or Fo-Ti (Polygonum Multiflorum)

He Shou Wu is an ancient Chinese herb that has been used for centuries for hair loss and baldness. It is available in both tea and capsule form and is one of the main ingredients found in many commercial remedies for the treatment of hair loss. In a recent study published by American Botanical Council, the authors note that this Chinese botanical shows promise as a hair and color restorative and is capable of inducing terminal hair to grow instead of vellus hair (the fine baby hair growth associated with use of minoxidil).

5) Panax Ginseng

Used in Asia for thousands of years, Ginseng’s well known benefits include promoting vascular circulation and regulating cellular metabolism. When used in shampoo or hair tonic, Ginseng helps to nourish and strengthen hair.

6) Pygeum (Pygeum Africanum)

Pygeum is taken from the bark of the evergreen tree and works in a very similar way to green tea. It has been used to treat problems with the prostrate for many years in China and can be found in pill or capsule form.

7) Saw Palmetto (Seranoa Repens)

Saw palmetto is a very popular choice for treating hair loss. Not only does it slow down the loss of hair, it also encourages the hair to regrow. In addition, Saw Palmetto has the ability to protect the prostrate.

8) Stinging Nettle (Urtica Diocia)

Stinging Nettle blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It can be bought in either pill or capsule form and is said to be more effective when used in combination with saw palmetto or pygeum.

The above eight herbs have been used by countless hair loss sufferers long before scientists started creating hair loss drugs or treatments. If you look around in a health food store or online, you will find that most herbal remedies for hair loss incorporate one or more of the above ingredients. These herbal hair loss solutions provide a feasible and safe option for men and women to treat their hair loss problem.

A Whole-Body Calisthenics Routine

Daniel at Home Calisthenics outlines an excellent whole-body calisthenics routine which takes you from beginner to advanced levels.
A good friend of mine recently explained to me that the his time for retoxing had long over run, and that he now wants to get back into training. I pointed him in the direction of this blog to learn a few of the basic calisthenics exercises, in reply to this he asked, "Do you have a routine i can follow?" This is when it dawned on me that i haven't published a post that outlines a routine. Here is that post.

When i train at home i like to make the most of the time available so my routines have minimal rest periods. Instead of rest periods i prefer to exercise a muscle group immediately followed by an unrelated muscle group. This isn't advisable for everybody so i will outline a breakdown of work/rest ratios. Drug Studies Suppressed - But Only the Negative Ones

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged antidepressant manufacturers not to disclose to physicians and the public that some clinical trials of the medications in children found the drugs were no better than sugar pills. Regulators suppressed the negative information on the grounds that it might scare families and physicians away from the drugs.

For at least three medications, the FDA blocked the companies' plans to reveal the negative studies on drug labels, and in one case the agency reversed a manufacturer's decision to amend its drug label to say that the drug was associated in studies with increased hostility and suicidal thinking among children.

Now the The New England Journal of Medicine reports that a majority of studies that get published about antidepressants are positive because negative studies remain unpublished. Read more

Fitness Trumps Fatness in Determining Risk of Cancer Death in Men

When it comes to reducing your risk of cancer death, a new study shows that getting fit is more important than losing weight.
The Cooper Institute, a research and education nonprofit located at the world-renowned Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, announces a new study published in Obesity showing that fitness trumps fatness in determining risk of cancer mortality among men. Cancer is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men. While tobacco use and poor diet remain the largest contributors to cancer mortality, for the first time there is new research that obesity and low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness contributes to cancer mortality as well.

“This is the first study that shows that sedentary men of all body fatness levels should strive to become at least moderately fit in order to decrease the risk of cancer mortality,” said lead researcher and Director of Professional Education Stephen Farrell, Ph.D. “Due to research by The Cooper Institute, we’ve long known that fitness is more important than fatness in decreasing the risk of heart disease. Now we know the same is true about death from all cancers among men. This is an important breakthrough to improve men’s health.” Read more

Lack of Sleep May Increase Type 2 Diabetes

The incidence of type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing among Americans. At the same time, Americans report getting much less sleep than previous generations did. University of Chicago researchers report a connection between the two.
Suppression of slow-wave sleep in healthy young adults significantly decreases their ability to regulate blood-sugar levels and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, report researchers at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Deep sleep, also called "slow-wave sleep," is thought to be the most restorative sleep stage, but its significance for physical well-being has not been demonstrated. This study found that after only three nights of selective slow-wave sleep suppression, young healthy subjects became less sensitive to insulin. Although they needed more insulin to dispose of the same amount of glucose, their insulin secretion did not increase to compensate for the reduced sensitivity, resulting in reduced tolerance to glucose and increased risk for type 2 diabetes. The decrease in insulin sensitivity was comparable to that caused by gaining 20 to 30 pounds. Read more

Working out without Weights

Though she believes that nothing beats throwing heavy weights around for building muscle, floridagirl outlines an all-bodyweight workout that you can do in a tiny college dorm room without so much as a heavy soup can. The only way you could not build muscle with this routine is not to do it. What I like about this routine is that it doesn't rely on high repetitions so much as it does on using more difficult bodyweight exercises.
... Before I give the routine, I'd like to offer a brief rundown of the pros and cons. Bodyweight exercises tend to recruit a vast array of muscle groups. This is great in terms of functional strength and learning to control your body. Additionally, bodyweight exercises tend to ensure that you work the full range of the targeted muscle. For example, barbell bench presses can allow your lower pecs to bear the bulk of the load, whereas a properly done push-up will recruit the upper pecs and pectoralis minor. But, while I still hold true to compound exercises, I think that it's good to be able to isolate certain muscle groups that just can't be fully tapped without weights, such as shoulders.

As far as building muscle, in my experience, nothing beats throwing heavy weights around. However, if you're just starting out, you'll make gains no matter what you do. Eventually, you WILL get to a point where you need to add weights, especially with lower body work. But when you're starting from nothing, you will certainly progress. This routine is also good for experienced weight lifters who are traveling or who periodize their routines to have light weight days.

Despite using no weights, this routine is NOT simple. Chances are it will kick your butt! Read more

You don't have to live with the misery of hair loss because, depending on the cause, there are 7 natural ways to maintain the hair you have and, sometimes, even reverse hair loss.
... Both men and women lose hair for similar reasons. Hair loss in men is often more dramatic, and follows a specific pattern of loss which has been termed "Male Pattern Baldness". This loss is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT).Factors for male hair loss include: heredity, hormones, and aging. This may also apply to women but to a lesser degree. Women may experience loss of hair after menopause and 2-3 months after having a baby. Other contributing factors include: poor diet, poor circulation, acute illness, radiation, chemotherapy, high stress, thyroid imbalance, certain drugs, coming off the contraceptive pill, diabetes, high doses of vitamin A (more than 100,000 IU), sudden weight loss, high fever, iron deficiency, ringworm, some fungal infections, chemicals and hair dyes, vitamin deficiencies, and lack of proper nutrition

Can You Build Muscle with a Home Workout?

One of the most common obstacles to maintaining a regular exercise routine is the expense and inconvenience of going to a gym for your workout. Someone who exercises for health can do bodyweight exercises or dumbbell workouts at home, but, if you're a serious bodybuilder, you have to join a gym, right? Not according to natural bodybuilder Sean Nalewanyj.
I receive emails everyday from aspiring lifters all over the world, and one of the most common questions I'm asked is…

“Do I have to join a gym in order to build a strong, muscular body?”

The answer, my friend, is no. With the right equipment and planning you can follow an equally effective bodybuilding program from the comfort of your home without ever having to set foot in a gym.

In fact, my first 2 years of bodybuilding were spent working out with basic equipment in my basement, and I saw incredible results doing this. Read more

10 Minute Bodyweight Exercise Program

If you claim that you can't exercise because you don't have time, you going to have to scratch that excuse. Researchers have found that even 10 minutes of exercise can improve your fitness. Craig Ballantyne, a workout routine and fat loss expert, outlines a 10 minute bodyweight exercise program that you can do in the comfort of your home.
If lack of time was holding you back from exercise, you can now scratch that excuse off the list.

A recent study from Louisiana State University shows that even 10 minutes of exercise per day can improve your cardiovascular fitness.

Researchers studied overweight or obese sedentary subjects and found that aslittle as 72 minutes of exercise per week (or 10 minutes per day) improved cardiovascular fitness by 4% compared to subjects that did nothing at all.

If you don't get any exercise, all you need to do is get off the couch and get moving for at least 10 minutes per day and you'll start to see improvements. As you become more advanced in your fitness, you can use short, intense workouts like the bodyweight exercises in Turbulence Training.

Here are some bodyweight exercises for you: Read more

Aspartame Turns Tissues to Plastic

Need another reason to quit using aspartame? Surgeons operating upon aspartame brain tumors often note a white plastic being formed throughout those aspartame-afflicted brains.
... Because dicarboxylic acid neural excitotoxins(from Aspartame, including its diketopiperazine) do not cross the blood brain barrier, but rather, are secreted into the ventricles by the choroid plexus, many of those areas mentioned by Dr Monte are the ones extremely afflicted by these Aspartame neural degenerations, to produce symptoms and disabilities from those specific areas arising, before plasticizing of the entire brain becomes specifically noticed, because diffuse plasticizing causes diffuse mental disabilities, while those structures mentioned by Dr Monte cause well defined syndromes and symptoms, beyond mental degenerations.
